Si-WEBS Jobs
Si transformations along the Land-Ocean Continuum:
12 Ph.D. and Postdoctoral positions
8 Ph.D. and 4 postdoctoral positions will be available from October 1st, 2002,
within the framework of the Si-WEBS Research Training Network. Si-WEBS (Natural
and Anthropogenic perturbations of the Silicon cycle: Worldwide Ecological,
Biogeochemical and Socioeconomical consequences) is a network funded by the
European Commission under the horizontal programme "Improving human research
potential and the socio-economic base". It focuses on the biogeochemical cycle
of silicon along the land-ocean continuum, with partners from Belgium, Denmark,
France, Germany, Greece and The Netherlands. The objectives of Si-WEBS are to
(1) improve our fundamental knowledge of the coupling between the Si and C cycles
in rivers, coastal zones and open oceans, (2) build quantitative modelling tools
to describe Si transformations along the Land-Ocean Continuum (LOC), (3) evaluate
the ecological, biogeochemical and socio-economical consequences of natural
and anthropogenic perturbations of the Si cycle along the LOC, and (4) include
Si based tools in watershed management policies, as an integral part of the
development of sustainable marine ecosystems.
Young researchers applying to Si-WEBS positions must be aged 35 years or less
at the time of their appointment. They must be nationals of a Community Member
State or an Associated State, or have resided in the Community for at least
five years prior to their appointment. Details of the work programme, positions,
and additional eligibility conditions for young researchers can be found at
the Si-WEBS web page: Si-WEBS.

Eligibility conditions for applying
To be eligible for an appointment under a network contract, the young researchers
must meet all of the following conditions:
- Age. They must be aged 35 years or less at the time of their appointment
by a participant. An allowance to age limit will be made for the actual time
spent in compulsory military or civil service or childcare (a maximum of two
years per child for the actual time spent off work).
- Qualifications. They must be holders of a doctoral degree or of a
degree that qualifies them to embark on a doctoral degree.
- Nationality. They must be nationals of a Community Member State or
an Associated State or must have resided in the Community for at least five
years immediately prior to their apointment by a participant in the frame
of the network contract.
- International mobility. They must not be nationals of the state in
which the participant's research team appointing them is located and must
not have carried out their normal activities in that state for more than 12
of the 24 months immediately prior to their appointment.
- Content of work. They must be appointed specifically to carry out
research in the context of the project programme or to assist the network
co-ordinator in the scientific co-ordination of the Human Potential network
project.
- Young researchers from 3rd countries applying the 5 year residence
rule should ensure that they are able to fulfill the immigration and visa
requirements for the Member State or Associated State in which they are to
be appointed.
